You want to feel strong but are asking yourself – where to start? You have a pretty good idea that weights are going to be needed. And that you will need to pick them up and put them down. But HOW? Whereas with most things, “just start” is a fair answer, I don’t take this approach with lifting weights. We have a higher risk for “failure” – which may look like injury when throwing oneself into weight training.
You are not fragile.
You do not need to be afraid.
You simply need the right information and guidance to get started.
I get the overwhelm. It’s valid. Just as you walk before you run, I suggest starting with the foundational movement patterns of: Squat, hinge, push, pull, and carry. As well as lunges, step ups, push ups, pull ups, and being able to find your “neutral spine + breathe into that position.”
You will need a program to follow. And gains will come easier when your training age is young. You also won’t likely be slangin’ heavy weights around. So just choose a program and get after it. YES, you can join Built By Annie as a newb. But do a goog for beginner weight lifting programs as well.
Then we have the mindset piece: Be a student – you’ll be better off if you commit to LEARNING about these movements, your body, and this “process” of weight training.
Once you’re started, or before you start, identify some performance goals: As basic as – lift 4 days per week for one month. Or more specific like – increase weight (or reps) each week. Stick to the tempo, even if that means longer rest periods or lower weights.
Start here.

Safety and knowledge is not to be ignored or belittled. Fact remains, lifting weights is magical for your body, mind, soul, self respect, AND you can get injured. Always respect the iron, and seek to learn. Learn patterns, learn about your own physiology, and how to make the most of your weight training.

How did you get into lifting weights? I learned in high school (computer cheer and weight lifting class – it wasn’t great but it was a start!)
