HOTEL LIVING

PART 3: SMOOTHIE DECEPTION

Hello and welcome to the third and final part of this three-part series.  This is a long one. Stick with me. I promise it will make your day.

If you missed the last two parts, they are worth catching up on {see two previous blog posts}.

Looking back, in part 1, we reflected on 3 unfortunate situations we have experienced in life or exercise.  Times that just didn’t go as planned.

In part 2, we went back to those situations and looked for the good, for the learning experience, for the growth from the ashes.

Today I want to share a harsh reality which will lead you to ASK ALL THE QUESTIONS.

From June 16th to almost September we lived in a hotel with NO way to cook – no kitchenette, just a microwave and MINI fridge.

Hell no was I going to eat hotel breakfast every morning…I’m too good for that right?

For about four weeks I was going through Brewed Awakenings’ drive through and getting a tall coffee with cream, and a smoothie, sub water where the fruit juice was. Other than that, the smoothie was berries, and Greek yogurt.

I thought I was doing okay right?

NO.

After those four weeks the kind barista says, “are you trying to avoid sugar?”  I said, “sure am.”

She suggested that I replace the Greek yogurt with milk because the yogurt had 22g of sugar in it…

I wanted to vomit…The smoothie didn’t even taste sweet! Here I was drinking my freaking milkshake for a month!!!  I was devastated.

I noticed they started having “kale + protein” available as boost.  I said heck, let’s add that for sure!

So for the next two weeks I kept coming back, berries, milk, kale + protein, and water.

We were golden now.

NO.

Another nice barista says to me, now six weeks into this smoothie relationship, “did you want the berry syrup in it?”

I said…”Excuse me?”  she repeated herself.

I can only imagine what my face looked like.

I said…”They aren’t real berries…?”

OF COURSE THEY WEREN’T! WHY IN THE GOOD LORD’S NAME WOULD THEY BE REAL?!?!?!

I was literally drinking a flipping milkshake for six weeks for breakfast.  No wonder I wasn’t feeling my best or seeing the results of my training.

It gets better.

The next day I drive through and literally say, “Hi, can I just get protein and milk?…I literally just want your kale + protein mix and milk. Charge me for whatever.”

She responds… “Welllll it’s really not that much protein…”

I said, “Well how many grams is it?”

5…it was 5 forsaken grams of protein.  THE MILK HAS MORE PROTEIN ALONE.  I would have been better off just asking for 12oz of milk every morning…

Again. I was drinking a milkshake on the daily for over six weeks.

So why am I sharing this with you?

I could only imagine what I was consuming at other restaurants I was visiting weekly.

Moral of the story.  ASK ALL THE QUESTIONS WHEN EATING OUT.

I should have asked on day one, “what exactly is in your smoothie?…How much sugar is in that?…How many grams of protein is in the mix?” YOU DON’T KNOW IF YOU DON’T ASK.

I clearly didn’t know.  I was unintentionally sabotaging myself.

I am pretty good about eating out and asking for what I want. I have been known to go to Burgerville and literally ask for two hamburger patties…with nothing…just two patties.  Hey, when I need protein, I need protein, okay?

You have the power to ask for what you want and need.  Especially in today’s society.

Ask all the questions you need to.  Don’t leave yourself in the dark.  You could end up drinking milkshakes for six weeks…

It’s always safer to just make your own food.  If you happen to eat out…ASK ALL THE QUESTIONS.

Have grace for yourself & LET’S DO THIS!

P.S. Share a story with us. Have you ever been amazed at the calories or composition of a food you ate?! Comment below!
