Gentle news flash for you – Unless you have a livable income through a significant other, or you’ve saved a fat ass nest egg for your entrepreneurial conquest…you’re probably going to be working full time or going to school or taking care of small humans while you start your online coaching business. Amen? And the congregation said, Amen.
So it’s a fair question to ask what the heck should you be focusing on when starting out. Beyond legally registering your business based on your location, and starting your business bank account, there are two things I believe are most important when starting a business.
It can be so overwhelming to think you need a website and a blog and 13 social media platforms, and an offer suite with an automated funnel. It’s only normal to look at successful people in your field (for most of you, this is online health and fitness), see what they’re doing now and think that’s what you need to be doing too. But remember that what those people have set up in present day, is not what they started with.
Lower the barrier to entry, put the blinders on and focus on only what is essential in this phase of your business. You can figure the rest out as you go.
Step 1 after legally setting up your online coaching biz – content content content in order to build an audience.
The best part about this is that in you creating high volumes of content you won’t only build an audience, but you’ll be consistent (building trust and dependability) and you’ll learn and hone your own messaging, voice and philosophy. It’s a win win. You can’t charge people without providing FREE value first in most situations. So swallow that pill now and buckle up for becoming a free content machine. It WILL come back to you!
Step 2 can 100% happen in tandem with step 1. That is all about your offer. For most health and fitness coaches the first offer will be one on one coaching. But not all one on one coaching is the same. You’ll have your own process and approach. This is what you’re building, and maybe learning, in step 2. The results you get your clients should then organically become a part of your marketing, and ideally word of mouth becomes a part of your client acquisition.
Attempt if you can, to continue to circle back to these two steps when in early stages of business. Build a firm foundation before looking to expand or pivot.
